History of the Courtship Candle
These stylish candle holders were popular in the Victorian era when courting was the height of fashion and proper etiquette. When a suitor would come courting, the father would light the candle – this
would allow the "couple" to have their time in conversation, on the front porch with the entire family right in the sitting room, overlooking the porch and the couple. When the candle burned down to the
metal holder, courting time was over.If the young gentlemen caller was "of the means" and showed some promise, the father would put
another candle in the holder and allow more time for the courting couple. If the gentlemen caller showed any signs of not being a suitable caller, then the father would snuff out the candle and the courting time was over. Although times have changed and courting evenings are over, candleholders are extremely popular within today's homes. |
