On June 10, 1815, Jefferson wrote to John Adams, "I cannot live without books." Apparently, Jefferson thought the nation could not
either, and so he sent his prized leather bound library to the capital, where it became the seed of our Library of Congress.
Jefferson designed his own cup, which we have reproduced in polished pewter and inscribed: "I cannot live without books." The 8-ounce
Jefferson Cup has been hand-crafted of lead-free pewter in the high polish finish and is safe for drinking. We will engrave the traditional monogram on the reverse side. Gift Boxed.

In 1806 Thomas Jefferson's friend and teacher, George Wythe, willed him two large silver cans of beakers of about 20 ounces weight and
of an undetermined design. After using them for several years, Jefferson sent them to John Letelier, a Richmond, Virginia silversmith,
with instruction to make eight smaller cups of about 5 ounces weight and 2 5/8 inches high with rounded bottoms. He further stipulated
that they be gilded inside and that four were to be marked "G.W. to T.J." and four, "T.J.". The completed cups were received at Monticello in October 1810, and were used there until Jefferson's death in 1826.
